Excited.

I bought a pair of Etymotic ER-6i earphones a week or two ago and their potential to damage/destroy my hearing is making me really excited about the whole prospect. I can't help but looking forward to spending time with them in my ears with my ipod or itunes cranked up!!

Good luck. I hope you don't just end up with tinitus, which would be the pits.

I already have tinnitus.

Hi there.

Quite a heroic plight you are undertaking... I personally own a pair of Etymotic ER-6i, and they are exactly what you need.

I will suggest, however, that your audio source be something other than an iPod - most digital audio players have a volume ceiling that will most likely not be strong enough to cause you permanent damage in a reasonable amount of time.

You will need some type of outboard amplifier without a noise gate - think guitar amp. Crank that up to 11! Of course, try not to blow the headphones.

Also... when I was a kid, my parents took me to see the Blue Angels (formation jet pilots) perform. It was a neat airshow. I still distinctly remember the screaming PAIN I felt as the planes skimmed over our heads. It was a sound louder than I've ever experienced.

Cheers, and good luck in your journey.

Hi vacantvoice! Thanks for your comments.

When I'm at home I use my MacBook which can be much louder than the iPod. But when outside the iPod is better than nothing.

An in-line amplifier would be nice but one of my major concerns is damaging the earphones before I damage my hearing! I have an audiogram in February and I can't keep buying £70 earphones between now and then. :(

I think I will subscribe to your journal. I'm afraid I can't add it as a friend (LJ is my main 'blog tool') for privacy concerns but I will add it to my RSS reader!
